The Hidden Ways Stress Shows Up in the Body

Stress is often thought of as something that happens in the mind.

We think about deadlines, family responsibilities, financial pressures, unexpected challenges, or simply trying to keep up with the pace of everyday life. But stress doesn't stop at our thoughts. Our bodies experience it too.

Whether the source of stress is physical, emotional, or mental, our bodies are designed to respond. Muscles tighten, breath becomes shallower, our heart rate increases, and we prepare ourselves to meet whatever challenge lies ahead.

In the short term, this response is incredibly helpful.

The difficulty arises when the challenge has passed but our body hasn’t switched the “respond” button off. Then, one busy week becomes another, or when we're constantly caring for others, juggling responsibilities, or pushing ourselves without enough time to recover. Our bodies can remain in a state of tension long after the stressful moment has passed. Over time, that tension can begin to feel normal.

          Where Stress Often Shows Up

Stress doesn't affect everyone in the same way.

For some people, it's the shoulders that gradually creep upwards until they almost meet the ears. Others notice a stiff neck that makes it uncomfortable to turn their head, or a jaw that's constantly clenched without them even realising it.

Some people develop headaches related to muscle tension. Others find themselves taking short, shallow breaths, feeling restless, or noticing a persistent tightness through the upper back or rounded shoulders.

Sometimes the signs are more subtle. You might find yourself fidgeting more, sleeping poorly, feeling unusually tired, or wondering why your body feels so tense when you haven't done anything physically demanding.

These are all examples of how the body can reflect what the mind has been carrying.

          We Don't Always Notice It

One of the cool things about the human body is its ability to adapt!

If you've been holding tension for days, weeks, or even months, it can start to feel familiar. Muscles gradually adjust to their workload, and what once felt tight simply becomes your "normal."

It's often not until that tension begins to ease that people realise just how much they were carrying.

I frequently hear clients say, "I didn't realise how tight my shoulders were," or, "I can actually take a deep breath now."

It's not because the tension appeared overnight. It's because our bodies are incredibly good at adapting, even when they're working much harder than they should.

          Relaxing Isn't Always Simple

People are often told to "just relax." If only it were that easy right?!

When your body has been in a protective state for an extended period, relaxing isn't simply a decision you can make. Your nervous system and your muscles have been working together to keep you ready for whatever comes next.

That protective response can become a habit.

Creating opportunities for the body to feel safe, supported, and comfortable can help interrupt that pattern. Gentle movement, good sleep, time outdoors, breathing exercises, and taking moments to slow down can all play a valuable role. Massage can also be part of that process.

Rather than forcing muscles to release, massage provides an opportunity for the body to soften in its own time. As tension begins to ease, breathing often becomes deeper, movement feels more comfortable, and many people leave feeling calmer than when they arrived.

          Everybody Carries Stress Differently

No two people experience stress in exactly the same way.

Two people can have similar jobs, similar lifestyles, or face similar challenges, yet their bodies may respond completely differently. One person may carry tension in their neck, another through their lower back, while someone else notices it in their jaw or hips.

That's one of the reasons I never approach treatment with a routine sequence.

Every massage begins by listening to you, understanding what life has looked like recently, and paying attention to how your body responds throughout the session.

Stress leaves its own unique imprint on each of us.

By taking the time to understand your story, your treatment can be tailored to support what your body needs on that particular day.

Because while stress may be a part of life, carrying its weight every day doesn't have to be.

Why Every Massage Should Be Different

          Our bodies change every day.

Whether we realise it or not, they absorb, adapt, brace, and respond to everything life asks of us. An extra session at the gym. A stressful week at work. Caring for a loved one. Spending the afternoon in the garden. Even the emotional load we carry can leave its mark.

All of these experiences shape how our bodies feel - physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Massage is a wonderful way to help release the tension that can build from everyday life. But because life is always changing, I believe your massage should change too.

          It Starts with Listening

Every treatment begins with a conversation.

This is your opportunity to tell me what has brought you in, how you're feeling, and what you hope to achieve from your session. We explore what may be contributing to your discomfort, what helps, what aggravates it, and how we can work together to help you feel more like yourself again.

If it's your first massage, I'll explain what to expect and answer any questions you may have. If you've had a massage before, I'd love to hear about those experiences too - what worked well and what didn't.

We also take the time to discuss your medical history, current health conditions, and any medications you're taking. Every part of your treatment is considered carefully so your massage is not only effective but appropriate for your individual needs. Because no two people are the same.

          Your Body Guides the Treatment

Once your treatment begins, we start with something simple - your breath.

Many people think this is just a gentle way to begin, but it's also the first opportunity for me to listen to your body. As I work, I'm feeling how your muscles respond, how your soft tissue moves, where restrictions are present, and how your fascia is behaving.

It's a little like gathering clues.

Your body tells me where tension is being held, which areas need more time, which techniques are likely to be most beneficial, and how your tissues respond throughout the session.

          That's why I don't follow a routine massage sequence.

           How could I?

Your body is unique, and your treatment should be too.

          Let's Talk About Pressure

One of the biggest misconceptions about massage is that firmer pressure always delivers better results.

In reality, the right pressure is the one that works for your body.

If you're holding your breath, tensing your muscles, or counting down the seconds until a painful technique ends, your body isn't relaxing - it's protecting itself.

Over the years, many clients have shared experiences of massages that were simply too firm. Some asked for the pressure to be reduced but felt unheard, leaving the session sore, bruised, or discouraged from booking another massage.

          That shouldn't happen.

During your treatment, your comfort matters.

I encourage open communication so we can find the pressure that's right for you. Sometimes that's deep. Sometimes it's surprisingly gentle. The goal isn't to use the most pressure possible; it's to use the right pressure to help your body release tension safely and effectively.

Every Massage Tells a Different Story

No two massages I give are ever the same because no two people arrive with the same story.

Your treatment evolves throughout the session, responding to what your body needs in that moment, not to a predetermined routine.

It always reminds me of a conversation between an ogre and a talking donkey about layers… Our bodies have layers too. Layers of movement, stress, tension, emotions, habits, and life experiences. Sometimes they reveal themselves immediately, and sometimes they take a little patience to uncover.

My role is to work with those layers, helping your body let go of what it's been carrying so you leave feeling lighter, calmer, restored, and able to breathe a little easier.

Because when you feel truly listened to, your body has the opportunity to respond in ways that routine treatments simply can't. That's the difference a personalised massage can make.
